"It blinked sideways, its lids translucent and slow, like shutters unsure of the light—trying to place what kind of meat I might be. Its skin pulsed with a color no eye should trust, and along its back, filament spines vibrated in a pattern that made my molars itch. It didn’t charge. It just… waited, like it knew something I hadn’t yet remembered."
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Yeah, the creature from my WIP is a Chronovore—basically a devourer of time (think Langoliers meets H.P. Lovecraft). I hope within a month or so to look for beta readers, so if you're interested, I’d love to get some fresh eyes on it!
The Planet of Adventure books have some pretty cool monsters/aliens, too.
But if I had to NOT pick Jack Vance... I get the creeps from the descriptions of the (cacogens? Iirc) in BotNS. And the monsters like the Alzabo. Honestly Gene Wolfe did a great job with all the lovely creatures in those books haha
Oh man I gotta read those! Apparently Gene Wolfe follows in the footsteps of Jack Vance. Obsidian Blackbird compared parts of my book to the Torturer’s Apprentice.
I couldn’t find a description of the Cacogens but if the fan art is anywhere near accurate, these things are pretty damn creepy!
Yeah, that sounded gross lol, it reminds me of Imperfect Cell's tail rom Dragonball Z. That always disturbed me.
I would say two descriptions always bothered me.
The Chupacabra, a vampire alien with no lips and batwings. Didn't help that it was on the news daily in the 90's.
And the Bigfoot description. Specifically, when its described as undetected until someone sees a face peeking back at them from the trees. that just so spooky to me. I don't even care about how he looks, it's the peeping tom aspect that freaks me out.
Haha I totally remember imperfect cell, and yes similar!
Those are some good ones, the no lips is weird… and yes the big foot peeking is just too much. Just like your epic poem! Also… have you watched Attack on Titan???? 👀👀 If you have you know…

I did lol Yeah that was really freaky.
Both bosses from resident evil 2 got to me lol
and in anime I would say Pride from Fullmetal Alchemist
Oh man Pride is a real creep! But how about Gluttony?????
Power wise Gluttony is scary. But personality wise, I always felt bad for Gluttony. I felt the opposite about Envy though. Evny was evil incarnate
Yeah he/she was a scumbag. Gluttony was just creepy how he ate people. Oh that’s right Envy ends up turning into that gross monster too.
I like that his stomach was a failed transmutation circle. I thought that was creative. I think I like gluttony too much to be scared of him lol
